Homework Expectations for 2026–2027

As we prepare for the start of the 2026–2027 school year, Superintendent Foster is sharing another important update with our Monson Public Schools community, this time regarding revisions to our homework expectations.
Homework provides students with an opportunity to practice and reinforce skills and knowledge they have already learned in school, while also helping students develop independent study skills, work habits, and the ability to plan for deadlines as they get older.
What Is Changing?
One of the changes for the 2026–2027 school year is that students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 will now be expected to complete a small amount of work at home. Previously, regular homework was not expected in these grades.
As Superintendent Foster explains in the video, the revised expectations are guided by several important principles:
Connected to the Curriculum
Homework will be based on the curriculum students are using in school and focused on skills and concepts they have already learned.
Quality Over Quantity
The focus will be on high-quality tasks that provide meaningful opportunities for students to practice their learning.
Time for Completion
Whenever possible, homework will be assigned with multiple days for students to complete it, recognizing that students may have activities and other commitments outside of school. There may be exceptions, particularly in advanced high school courses such as Advanced Placement courses.
An Honest Effort Matters
If a student makes an honest attempt to complete an assignment but does not understand it, they can bring the incomplete assignment back, receive additional information or instruction from their teacher, and try again. In the early grades, this can be done without penalty.
Reasonable Expectations
Homework expectations will increase as students move through the grades. In Kindergarten through Grade 2, for example, expectations include approximately 20 minutes of reading about four nights per week and up to 10 minutes of math practice four nights per week. Reading may include students reading independently or reading aloud with their family.
